The value of Aromatic Essential Oils in Chicken and Table Egg Production

Aromatic essential oils are plant oils that is produced by extraction through distillation. These oils are 100% natural and is used for a wide variety of applications in the cosmetic, health and animal production industries. The chemical structure always consists of terpenoids, terpenes and aromatic aldehydes and phenols. These volatile oils are growing in popularity due to its potential as first line of defence products in order to reduce the chronic use of antibiotics. Origanum oil for example is used widely in the chicken industry as antiviral and antibacterial product in chicken and egg production sites where use of antibiotics are prohibited. The aromatic oils used so far in the world poultry industries include Eucalyptus oil (cineol) – expectorant and antibacterial, Oregano oil – antiviral and antibacterial, Menthol – soothing and antibacterial, Peppermint – antibacterial, Tea tree – antibacterial and antiviral, Thyme, Rosemary, Garlic, Sage, Savory, Onions, Ginger, Chamomile and Clove. Of these oils the following aromatic compounds were most effective in killing bacteria; Oregano Oil, Peppermint Oil, Tea Tree Oil, Rosemary Oil and Thyme Oil. Oregano showed the widest kill spectrum ranging from Aspergillus, E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria and Staphaureus followed by Peppermint and Thyme oils. These oils are biodegradable and has no withdrawal period making it practical application in commercial chicken units such as broilers and also table eggs where the use of any antibiotics is prohibited due to withdrawal requirements.
