The value of Aromatic Essential Oils in Chicken and Table Egg Production
Aromatic essential oils are plant oils that is produced by extraction through distillation. These oils are 100% natural and is used for a wide variety of applications in the cosmetic, health and animal production industries. The chemical structure always consists of terpenoids, terpenes and aromatic aldehydes and phenols. These volatile oils are growing in popularity due to its potential as first line of defence products in order to reduce the chronic use of antibiotics. Origanum oil for example is used widely in the chicken industry as antiviral and antibacterial product in chicken and egg production sites where use of antibiotics are prohibited. The aromatic oils used so far in the world poultry industries include Eucalyptus oil (cineol) – expectorant and antibacterial, Oregano oil – antiviral and antibacterial, Menthol – soothing and antibacterial, Peppermint – antibacterial, Tea tree – antibacterial and antiviral, Thyme, Rosemary, Garlic, Sage, Savory, Onions, Ginger, Chamomile and Clove. Of these oils the following aromatic compounds were most effective in killing bacteria; Oregano Oil, Peppermint Oil, Tea Tree Oil, Rosemary Oil and Thyme Oil. Oregano showed the widest kill spectrum ranging from Aspergillus, E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria and Staphaureus followed by Peppermint and Thyme oils. These oils are biodegradable and has no withdrawal period making it practical application in commercial chicken units such as broilers and also table eggs where the use of any antibiotics is prohibited due to withdrawal requirements. Super Air® is produced and supplied by Super Agri Science and contains Eucalyptus Oils, Menthol Oils, Peppermint and Oregano Oil. The product can be used through the drinking water or as a spray in the house. Through the drinking water use at a rate of 250ml per 1,000 litters water for 3 – 5 days periods. Super Air® is especially effective during periods of difficult breathing, airway restrictions, when snick/vaccine reaction occur, poor air quality, season of low humidity leading to dry out of respiratory mucus barriers and respiratory infection and inflammation. Super Air® can also be used during periods of Heat Stress due to the soothing effect of menthol and peppermint and prevention of infection due to drying of respiratory mucus barriers.
