Various studies have shown that sodium chlorate (Super Sal Stop®) is effective in reducing and preventing pathogenic enteric salmonella shedding and invasion of oviduct and organs (McReynolds et al, Poultry Science 2005). The product is also highly effective against e. coli related problems due to its specific mode of action that kills pathogenic enterobacteria such as e. coli and salmonella.
The antibacterial treatment options for table egg layers are limited due to the withdrawal requirements of most antibiotic products available on the market. Super Sal Stop®, which contains sodium chlorate and hydrogen peroxide, mode of action has been proven and has no withdrawal requirement. The product offers a viable alternative to antibiotics for use in table egg layers for the prevention of e. coli related mortality spikes and salmonella control.
Egg laying flocks that turned salmonella positive should be treated with Super Sal Stop® for at least 5 – 7 days continuously at 1 to 2 litres per 1,000 litre drinking water. This will reduce the transfer of pathogenic salmonella into the eggs significantly and limit risk of invasion of the liver, ovary and spleen. Salmonellosis is a dangerous foodborne disease in humans with eggs and chicken an important food product in the transfer of salmonella to humans.
Super Sal Stop® can also be used as part of a prevention program at a rate of 1 litre per 1,000 liter drinking water for 3 days every month.
